Expat essays

Three books that offer “A glimpse into another world explained by a writer who notices all the little details that make life interesting.”

Originally published as newspaper columns between 2004 and 2010, the short essays compare and contrast life in Spain with the UK from the point of view of an ex-pat based in Madrid (Capital Letters and Enchufado) and, later, in a pueblo (Los vecinos and other animals).

Sprinkled with lighthearted linguistic insights, the pieces in Capital Letters and Los vecinos touch on stories in the news and current affairs at the time, both British and Spanish. They are written mainly in English, but with a scattering of Spanish that allows the reader to assimilate new vocabulary and phrases from context. The pieces in Enchufado are written in Spanish. They mirror the topics of the later pieces from Capital Letters, and provide an opportunity to deepen the understanding of the language.

Since the original columns were published, there have been many cultural and lifestyle changes, politicians have been ousted, and policies have been reviewed. The essays do not claim to reflect the current situation, but, written with perception, sympathy and wry humour, they retain their appeal. touching on stories in the news and current affairs, both British and Spanish.
